My approach to editing

When I am editing a text, my main concern is clarity. My aim is to help you communicate to your audience in a clear and concise manner.

What you can expect from me

If you send me a text to edit, I will give it a close, critical reading and mark it up with ‘track changes’.

I will explain the changes I make in the margins, and I will point out where I am unsure of what you are trying to say.

I will make constructive suggestions for how you can improve your work (beyond the changes I make). If I think something is missing or poorly explained, I will comment on it (sometimes at length).

The things I will help you improve

  • The coherence of the text as a whole (of argument, content, organisation, flow)
  • The structure of paragraphs
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Conciseness (eliminating unnecessary words and phrases)
  • Style and readability.

When you look at my changes and suggestions

If there is anything you don’t understand, you just need to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you about the decisions and suggestions I have made.
